My work in progress Unimog build that started out as a 2.2 but turned into a 1.9. My first crawler was a 2.2 but after going on a bunch of runs, most guys had 1.9 rigs so I decided to go that route with this build. Here goes....

    Initial inspiration

The idea was to have a tubed frame and cab that bolted to each other this is the frame

    Used a Tamiya body to.....
    ...take a mold impression
Heres the front clip with the cab cage.

Then decided to go with 1.9's!

Then woke up one morning and decided to chop it all up....

    ...and make a 4 seater
As of this post this is the current status. Done with brazing for now (more to come later for details). Gonna wire it up and test run it to see if mods need to be made for clearance etc.

Looks great, I'm in the middle of the same build but got stuck on the axles. I wanted to use the worm drive Comp losi 25/1, still in the works.
Hope to see you out at a GTG soon.

I have a set of those Comp axles on stand by incase these T-Rex's don't work out. Wanted to try Rex's first since my current Rock Force based crawler devours batteries like there's no tomorrow cuz of the worms - usually 3x the battery of a comparable rig using a normal axle setup on scale runs!

Definitely going to watch your build to see how you decide to setup those axles on your rig for future reference.

The blue stuff you see in that photo is silicone rtv rubber. After it hardened on the master(tamiya shell), I backed the rtv with some bondo and wood dowels. This is to help the rtv retain its shape as I make parts from it.

Yeah right now that hood is made of 50/50 bondo and resin with glass imbedded. Its super strong but on the heavy side. When I make the final part it will be more glass and less bondo/resin to make it lighter.

No release spray is necessary, thats the nice thing about rtv - almost nothing will stick to it.

Yeah so do I, how much torch time do you have in to the cage? are you doing it with a Oxy/acetylene torch or a smaller one?

Thanks guys. I enjoy metal working so torch time is not really something I keep track of. I use a jeweler's oxy/acet torch so technically torch time is very short since the heat is so precise. Probably no more than 10-20 seconds for each joint max, most joints take as little as 5 seconds. The most time consuming part is measuring, bending and cutting. I try my best to be within 2mm tolerance.
